Long distance walks
This page outlines long distance linear trail walks that may take several months to complete. Members can do all or some (or none).

The East DeaEaste Deane Way signne Way is being "launched" by His Worship The Mayor on 30th June and the six leaflets on the 46 mile trail (now laboriously waymarked by us) are available at the Deane House  (quite a few of John O's pictures on them !)

MacMillan Way, with Eric
On October 5th Rod Carne, or perhaps more accurately, his guide dog Eric, will be leading the first section of the Macmillan Way West from outside the house of Douglas Macmillan in Castle Cary to Somerton.  Stage 2 will be from Somerton to Burrow Mump.  Both walks will be 11 - 12 miles and will be facilitated by a small coach from Taunton.  If sufficient members are interested walking the way will continue on a once a month basis to Barnstaple. Seats are limited and booking is essential. Contact Rod, not Eric, on rod.carne@talktalk.net.

Channel to Channel
Three out of the four sections have been walked with a coach-full of participants each time and even some desiring of a seat being turned away! The weather has not always been kind, the first leg started wet, dried up for the lunch break and ended after the group encountered a raging river that had flooded the roadway. Back at the coach in the gloaming it was hard to locate individual boot bags and some inadvertent swapping of footwear occurred! The second leg was brighter and drier and ended just above Taunton on the Blackdown Hills. The weather forecast for part three included the words ‘lashing rain the afternoon’ but someone up there was kind to us and a brief shower while sheltering for lunch in Vivary Park was all we got and walking through Taunton was greener than some had imagined. We just have the Quantocks to the sea to do and everyone would like to thank John Lowe for his organisation, multiple spreadsheets, getting us to the Crescent for 8.30am on a Sunday,
and his irrepressible good humour!

The South West Coast Path – weekends or more
Would you be interested in a few long weekends to walk some of the special parts of the coast path? A short series of long weekends comprising travel on Thursday evening, walking on Friday, Saturday and half of Sunday and staying in B&Bs are suggested. Or would you like to walk the whole thing? Contact John Lowe on 01823 490400 to express interest.
Two Counties Way
Have you thought about trying the local Long Distance Path - The Two Counties Way - which runs from French Weir in Taunton to Star Cross? Have a look at the web page
Somerset now has a map to show all trails across the County in a brochure and on the web. See here. Also Somerset Information Bureau is very supportive of Taunton Deane Ramblers Group. Visit their Web Site.
Blackdown Hills AONB has a smashing new website, with lots of walking booklets you can download.
