Leave the car at home and hop on the bus, but make sure it is the right bus! We will meet up at Taunton bus station at 1pm to catch the 606 to Elworthy Cross. Be warned; the 606 only runs one service on Wednesday so miss it and that’s that; so don’t be late.
The ride out is an interesting one and where the bus actually goes seems to depend on the destinations of the passengers. The published route is Bishops Lydeard, Ash Priors, Lydeard St Lawrence, Handy Cross, Tolland and Brompton Ralph before Elworthy, but on the reccy day we didn’t bother with Bishops Lydeard and Lydeard St Lawrence and the driver said that this was the first time she had been into Brompton Ralph for a month! If you are catching the bus anywhere on the route other than the bus station (it actually leaves from Castle Way, just around the corner from the bus station) then let the leader know in advance so that we can make sure the bus visits that point.
From Elworthy Cross we take to open farmland in a gradual downhill to Stogumber and then a short break to admire the Quantock red sandstone church, but probably not quite enough time to sample the beers at the White Horse. The second half is a mix of country lanes together with paths through woods and farmland to arrive at Bicknoller, close to the No 28 bus stop. We are quite safe here as there is a ½ hourly service back to Taunton.
Access is mainly via gates, but there are eight stiles, a couple of which are quite difficult.
